Campanet: Authentic Mallorca with mountains, woods and local springs
Living in Campanet is just how you imagine country life on the Balearic Island of Mallorca. This is a delightful, sleepy pueblo with old townhouses and windy streets that lead you back to its beating heart, the Plaza Major. Here you can enjoy a café con leche and chat with the friendly locals before heading out for a nearby country walk.
Mainly an agricultural town, Campanet also has an interesting shoe-making history including a time in the early 20th century when 62 workers in a Campanet factory produced no less than 422,000 pairs of laced espadrilles that were sent to the armies of both Cuba and Mallorca. These days people of Campanet mainly work in the tourism industry in Alcudia and Pollensa, or the service and construction industries in Inca and Palma.
Living in Campanet
This is a quiet town, largely untouched by mass tourism. It must be said, people who live in Campanet don’t come here for the shopping or nightlife. Aside from the weekly market every Tuesday morning, where you will find the best local produce, and the little supermarket for daily essentials, there is not much in terms of shopping. But what it lacks in consumerism, Campanet more than makes up for with its stunning countryside and interesting sites. Most notably the Caves of Campanet and the forest area, Ses Fonts Ufanes.
Discovered in 1945, by a local resident digging a well, the Caves of Campanet cover an area over 3,000m2 and a guided tour takes you along 400m of galleries and chambers. Just around the corner you find the Hermitage de Sant Miquel, a 13th century chapel. From here you will find the gate to the finca Gabelli Petit and Ses Fonts Ufanes where, if the water table is high enough, water bursts from the ground and magically floods the woods leaving enough space to wander around and take in the beauty.
